Museum Photography Guidelines
From iPhones to GoPros to DSLRs to vintage film, EVERYONE has a camera now!
The Charles River Museum welcomes photography of our exhibits and the public Museum spaces during our standard operating hours.
BUT !!
There are some rules and guidelines we ask of ALL those wishing to take pictures in the Museum
(and some special requests of visiting photography groups, classes, and photography aficionados)
General Rules for ALL Photography in the Museum
NO flash photography.
Please do not photograph any other Museum Visitors without their permission. ANY photography of our younger Visitors is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
Respect other Visitors’ privacy and their wishes, should they decline to be photographed. Do NOT inquire about photographing any person under 18 years of age attending alone or with adult Visitors.
Failure to comply with these rules may result in your being asked to leave the Museum.
Do not move or alter any Museum exhibits or their signage.
Do not stand on any Museum seating, handrails, etc when taking photographs.
Photography is only allowed in Museum areas actively open to the public.
No photography in any area marked as photo-prohibited (such as child activity areas like Innovation Alley).
Please comply with any requests made by the Museum staff.
Photography Groups, Classes, and More Serious Photographers
We welcome all levels of photographers, from the casual visitor to the seasoned professional. But for the latter, as well as photo groups and classes, we have some additional rules:
Mind your gear. Camera bags, tripods, and rolling cases should not impede the movement of other Visitors. Do not block any doorways, exits, or stairs with your gear, If another Visitor needs to get past, politely and promptly take your shot, allow them to proceed, and then reset. Please bring only what gear you intend to use.
The Museum is not responsible for any gear you bring onto our premises.
No photo groups larger than TEN PEOPLE (not including instructor/organizer).
Photo classes or photo groups (of 3 or more, not including instructor/organizer) must contact the Museum in advance, preferably a week or more. There are events and other activities, both public and private, that may be disrupted by your presence and work. Please let us know when you are planning on visiting so we may warn you of any situations that could prove problematic.
Though we will always try to be accommodating, we reserve the right to turn away any group or individual that we feel may be a hindrance to the Museum’s work or its other Visitors. Please make all members of your group aware they are subject to our Museum Admission fees, especially if they are already paying to take a class.
No photography involving special lighting gear, stands, props, or models allowed during Museum operating hours. Options for rental of the Museum for formal photo sessions may be possible on a case by case basis.
