THE RYAN LEE CROSBY/DANNY MEKONNEN DUO with guest Koushik Chakrabarty
Another exciting first time collaboration, this one between Ryan Lee Crosby, a Boston based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has grown from punk rock roots to develop a personal guitar approach that finds inspiration in traditional folk and blues sounds of the American south and in the classical music of north India, and Danny Mekonnen, an Ethiopian-American saxophonist and founder and leader of Debo Band whose self titled debut was included on NPR's 50 Favorite Albums of 2012. This led to performances at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, South by Southwest and the Ethiopian Music Festival in Addis Ababa. He is also a member of the Nile Project, an international coalition of musicians from every country bordering the Nile River.
When asked to describe what the audience should expect in this project, Ryan Lee Crosby stated "I anticipate that it will be a mix of American and African sounds, played on 12 and 22 string guitars, saxophone, and calabash. While the emphasis will be on improvisation, I imagine we will may use some songs or song fragments as spring boards to blast off from."
